Introduction

The Unitat de Tuberculosi Experimental (UTE) -joining the Institut per a la Investigació en Ciències de la Salut Germans Trias i Pujol- was founded on 1997, inside the Microbiology Department of the Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol to study the pathology mechanisms involved in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, where the use of tuberculosis models with experimentation animals was required. That’s why a Level 3 Biological facility was available from the beginning. Because of the scarcity of such facilities, the UTE has had the aim to be open to any kind of collaboration with research groups that might require these kind of models to run their projects. |

So far, the UTE has focused in the study of histopathology, immunogenicity and virulence, as well as diagnosis, prophylaxis and treatment of M. tuberculosis infection. The origin of latent bacilly has been one of the paramount focuses during these years. The development of a therapeutic vaccine (RUTI) which will reduce significantly the treatment of latent tuberculosis infection has been one of the main results from this focus.
